When You Can’t Go Home For Christmas

Some years, you just can’t go home for Christmas. You may not have the finances, there may be a medical reason, or the timing just doesn’t line up. Maybe you are taking a vacation over the holidays so you won’t be able to head up to visit family. Whatever the reason may be, there are many people in this country who will not be around family during the holidays.

The last 3 years my husband and I have had a variety of Christmas’. Sometimes we are able to go home for the holidays, and sometimes we can’t. We’ve done all that we can to be with family, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out. So today, I want to focus on what to do when you can’t go home and how to make the most of it.

1.) Find a way to do traditions on your own, or invent a new tradition.

This is the one that I have been working on the most this year. We don’t really have any traditions just the two of us, because the last 3 Christmas’s have been all over the place. So this year, I am hoping to implement a few Christmas traditions. My thoughts right now are below, but please leave me a comment on your favorite tradition!

  • Christmas Eve Box – Complete with popcorn, your favorite candy, and matching pjs.
  • Christmas Eve Movie Night – Pick a movie and bring your Christmas Eve Box so you can get in the holiday spirit.
  • Christmas Morning – Monkey Bread breakfast
  • Christmas Morning – Movie Morning opening gifts and eating breakfast

Whether it is you and your partner, you and a friend, or just you; create a tradition that makes you happy and puts you into the holiday spirit. Christmas is all about what you make of it, so embrace the fun!

2.) Get out of the house.

Christmas can just feel longer when you are spending it alone. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by thoughts of not being with loved ones and seeing pictures of family gathered together. My suggestion is to put down your phone, turn off the TV and get out of the house. Go for a walk, go to the local park, anything to get your mind off those thoughts. Spending some time resetting and enjoying the outdoors will put things into perspective and brighten your mood.

3.) Be a misfit at a coworker or friends Christmas

Don’t be embarrassed to go to someone else’s Christmas. It’s okay to accept someones offer to go to their house for the holidays. I can tell you with 100% certainty that I am extremely uncomfortable and awkward going to someone else’s house for the holidays. I can’t help but feel like the uninvited misfit no one wants there. But that is not true! They are trying to be kind and make sure you aren’t alone during the holidays. So push through the awkwardness and be thankful! It may be weird at first, but you will be thankful for it later!

Remember, its okay to be a little sad on Christmas. It’s okay to not be near family or to be alone during the holidays. Just pick yourself back up and remind yourself that you are smart, beautiful and full of confidence. Make this holiday one to remember, its all up to you and your mindset!

Confident Women- 5 Steps to Becoming More Confident

Today is all about helping you be the most confident woman you can be. There are such extreme views on women, both from progressive and conservative minds.

You are told who you should be, how you should act, what you should buy, and what your career path should look like. But there is rarely a conversation of how you become more confident in your life. And if you focused on being more confident, how much stronger would you be in all the other areas of your life. Being your most confident self will lead you to the places you always wanted to go, but will also help you to stay grounded. Becoming more confident does not happen overnight. It is not something a simple makeover will do for you. To truly become more confident you need to change some of your lifestyle habits.

So today we are going over 5 steps to a more confident life.

1.) Show Up and Exercise.

I don’t care how you exercise, I don’t care what intensity or how pretty you look doing it. What I care about is you showing up. Show up for yourself. Exercise isn’t just healthy for your physical health its critical for your emotional health. Confidence comes from within and how can you feel good and confident if you aren’t taking care of your body? Again, I am not saying you need to be a size two with a perfect ‘model’ body. I am saying that you need to give your body the exercise it desperately needs. Your body is made to move and it needs to move to function at it’s highest capacity. So treat it well and show up for yourself. My workouts are never pretty : its ugly, its tough, I fail over and over again. But when I show up, my body and mind feel 100% better. Do this for yourself and no one else and watch your confidence begin to grow.

2.) Make Small Diet Changes

I can tell you right now that I have never been able to make immediate long term diet changes. I’ve never been able to say, no more carbs, and keep it up. The only thing that has ever worked is to make small choices as often as I could. Small choices where I choose the healthy option. When I give in and eat 10 Oreos when I shouldn’t have, I don’t get mad at myself, I just push myself to make the next choice healthy. Like eating salmon for dinner instead of a burger. Small choices will lead to bigger life changes. So be okay that you will occasionally fail. Be okay that these changes won’t happen overnight. Just start each day with a fresh mindset knowing that you can always make the next choice a healthy one. And remember that confidence comes from within and taking care of your body is the first step.

3.) Five Positive Affirmations

Every day say five positive things about yourself. It doesn’t matter how crappy you may feel that day. Be positive in that moment about who you are. Telling yourself what is good about yourself once a day will slowly help you see past the negatives the world puts in your mind. Your mental health is just as important as physical health and the brighter your mental health the more confident you will be. Confidence really comes when you believe in yourself and believe that you are worthy.

To get you started here are a few of my affirmations.

1.) I am worthy of good things.

2.) I am beautiful just the way I am.

3.) My worth is not defined by others.

4.) It is okay to to put myself first and to take care of myself.

5.) My future is whatever I want it to be.

4.) Speak Kindly to Others

Speak kindly to others. I have noticed that when I am harsh or angry toward those around me it makes me far less confident. Because confident people don’t need to tear others down or be mean to those around them. Confident people invest in others, speak kindly to those they meet and treat others with respect. Confidence is being the best version of yourself and knowing that confidence is being confident in who you are not how others see you. When you do encounter situations where you have been hurt, angered or mistreated; step back. Step back and reevaluate the situation. Step back, call a loved one and remember that life is bigger than that person who mistreated you. Kindness is always the best option, even if it doesn’t feel that way in the moment.

5.) Be Content

Be content with who you are right here, right now. You have worked hard to get to where you are. Be content with where you are. This doesn’t mean that you don’t have goals and plans for the future, it simply means you are content with where you are right now. When you accept where you are today you will develop extreme confidence. Who wouldn’t have confidence when they accept themselves where they are? Instead of constantly judging themselves against what they don’t have. Instead of looking to others for their contentment, look inward. Once you do, you will see the confidence start to grow. Choose to look at your blessings and be content with what you have right now.

You have all the tools you need to be confident. All it takes are a few changes every single day. Once you start making these changes, you will slowly start reaping the rewards. Confident people are developed over time. Be gracious with yourself and remember that you can do this!

Arizona – The Final Chapter

Arizona has been my husband and I’s home for the last three and a half years. It has been a place of incredible exploration and growth. Arizona holds a special place in our hearts. As we drove out of Arizona, I can’t help but tear up over the people we have met and the places we have seen.

Arizona is where my husband got his masters degree, its where he started medical school and had the true beginnings to his medical career. This is where I saw my husbands passion for helping others and fixing their aches and pains to give them a happy and long life.

Arizona is where I got my first grown up job and where I met some of the most wonderful amazing friends. It’s the place where I was challenged, where I was forced to get stronger, to develop more courage and to embrace the woman of God I was meant to be. Each day in Arizona has taught me so much, to believe in myself and to know that who I am IS GOOD ENOUGH.

As I look back on my time in Arizona, I am filled with endless thankfulness. Thankful for all the opportunities, struggles, growth and love that we have experienced here. I am thankful for the amazing places we have gotten to see (check out our Arizona Travel Guide!). This was in no way my first choice when we were talking about places to live, but it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

For those of who wondering how you will survive in this world, how you will make it from each day to the next, let me be your voice of encouragement. To know that you are strong enough to move away from your hometown. To know that you have the courage to explore this world and all it has to offer. You have the love and kindness to take on each situation with grace and know that there is a God out there watching you and protecting you. Trust in Him. Trust that He is guiding your steps, that when you aren’t sure why you are heading down that path, that He has a plan for you.

As J.R.R. Tolkien once said, “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” Decide today to accept the adventure ahead of you and embrace the change in your life!

Where Are The Aldridge’s?

Have you ever thought about how much control you have over your future?

Well, when you are in medical school you leave a lot of your fate up to chance. You hope for the best externships programs, you hope that you are matched to the program of your choice. You hope for the best, but you don’t have near the say you wish you did.

We did our externship applications this month, which means we have a completely crazy third and fourth year ahead of us. We placed our lives and futures in a lottery pool and hoped that we would get blessed with the programs we wanted. If you’ve never been through this process, let me explain how it works.

We have about 8 months to fill with externship programs, not including the 5 month home hospital that we have on top of this. You fill out a sheet that basically allows you to apply for 4 externships a month and hope that you receive some offers. The problem that arises is, you get a lot of offers in the same month, which means you have to prioritize one really good program over another and hope you make the right decision.

So, we have spent the last couple weeks praying and hoping that we get some good programs that will give us an insight into their residency and what education they can provide my husband. All of our offers have come and we have filled all of our months for the year! I am so excited to share with you where we will be and am very hopeful that I will get to share every experience with you! Stress Free Work Week

You are going to have an amazing week!

You are not going to let stress ruin your week!

Work weeks are tough. There is no getting around it; something goes wrong, a client gets frustrated or a coworker makes you mad. Stress is a constant factor in our lives, especially at work. But there are ways to help alleviate this and make your week fantastic!

The first step is to recognize that while it is an important part of your life, it isn’t everything. That means that when something goes wrong, it’s okay to shrug it off and move on. There are very few problems that warrant the stress we give them. One of the lies I believe the world has told us is that we need to stress out about everything that doesn’t go our way. The danger of this lie is that it causes you physical and emotional harm to stress about every little thing. It hurts you to worry yourself about things you have no control over or trivial things that won’t matter in 2 months. When you find yourself stressing this week, start following these few tips.

  1.  Get up and walk away. Walking away from the situation will help you to put the situation into perspective and to be able to handle with a clear and calm mind.
  2.  Take a sip of icy water. Always have a bottle of water at your desk. Taking small sips of water when you are stressed will help your body to calm down and fight the stresses.
  3. A technique I learned from a therapist in college is to close your eyes and breathe in for six seconds and then exhale for seven seconds. Repeat this technique until you can feel the tension and stress leave your mind. It sounds silly, but this is, without doubt, one of the best techniques I’ve ever tried.

The next thing is to think about what you want to be remembered for. Do you want to be remembered for being stressed out at work? Remembered as the person who was unhinged and constantly worried about things outside their control? Or would you rather be remembered as someone who always brought joy and happiness to those you worked with? Someone who always lent a helping hand to others and valued your needs over their own. Those traits are so much more important than high sales numbers and increased profit margins. Money comes and goes, but character makes a lasting difference. Take charge of your week and choose joy over stress.

At the end of this week, you are going to look back and say that you kicked butt this week. Remember that you are a Rockstar and God has got an incredible plan for your life.

In the hard moments, pray for wisdom and guidance. 

When you are stressed, know that God has every situation under control.

You are loved, and you got this.

Living with a Fisherman/Hunter

Growing up my dad wasn’t an avid fisherman or hunter. He would go hunt occasionally, and we would go fishing in the pond behind our house, but it was never a lifestyle for him. So when I started dating my husband, I was immersed in a lifestyle that was centered around fishing and hunting. Let me tell you, it was a major change for me!

First off, fishing and hunting takes a lot of time! The first time he tells you he is going fishing, you think, “okay, he will be gone a couple hours or so”. Nope! I’m going fishing is code for, “I am leaving at 4:30 am to drive to the lake by sunrise and I will be gone until dusk.” And that is the exact same line you get during hunting season. Good part is, you get a free day all to yourself! However, when it becomes an every weekend thing, sometimes you go with him just to spend some time together!

The next thing you learn is that fishing and hunting are very expensive hobbies! I had no idea the amount of lures, rods, scopes, guns, ammunition, clothing and many more things that are needed to accomplish these hobbies. My nights now consist of watching my husband look up new fishing and hunting techniques, videos on new gear coming out and showing me the boats and land we will be acquiring in the future.

Although there are things about my husbands hobbies that are a huge lifestyle adjustment, one thing he always does is he is so considerate of my feelings. He always asks to make sure I don’t have plans for us before he goes out and he always invites me along if I want to go. Never once has he said I couldn’t go or that I had to stay home, he always encourages me to come along or do something I enjoy while he is gone. While fishing and hunting are expensive and time consuming, I could think of worse things my husband could do. Fishing and hunting ground him, help him to relax after a stressful week and really connect him with the Lord.

So my advice for spouses of an avid fisherman/hunter, count your blessings! You love a wonderful person with so many amazing qualities and interests!

1st Year Medical School-What I’ve Learned

My husband, Evan, started his second year of medical school today. As we were talking about how relaxed he was heading into his second year, I started to reflect on this past year and what I have learned.


We started Evan’s journey into medical school knowing we had a long 4-year road ahead of us. The program does not allow my husband to have a lot of time to be with me or to help around the house, leaving most of the day to day work as my responsibility. There are many days where it is difficult for me to keep up with everything, but my husband has never once complained. He has met me with patience and love, knowing I am doing my best to keep up with everything going on; and while keeping up with all my responsibilities is daunting at times, it is nothing compared to what I see my husband go through.


My husband works ’round the clock, 7 days a week. When he is not at school or in the lab, he is studying. Every day is a new battle for him. He faces two hard exams every Monday and Friday, with labs and practicals in between. The material is extensive and time-consuming, but even through his hardest weeks of studying I can hear his excitement for what he is doing; Learning a new skill, investigating a new research technique, getting to work in the labs. He loves his career, and that makes every struggle we have come across this year worth it.


One of the hardest parts of medical school is trying to explain to anyone outside of the medical field how much time and effort we put into this- How much money we are investing, how we truly can’t go to every family or social event we’re invited to, etc. We make sacrifices, more than we want to. But that is the beauty of doctors that many overlook. They dedicate years of their lives to studying and perfecting their craft, taking on thousands of dollars of debt, and sacrificing many things in their personal life to take care of your family members and friends.


So today, I want to take a moment to thank all the medical professionals out there because when you have sacrificed over 8 years of your life in school, 3-4 years of residency, and years of specialty to be able to serve the community to the best of your ability you are a true hero. The next time you see any sort of Doctor or medical professional, take a moment and thank them for all they do!
